The Discover Darlington Project, started by Darlington accommodation provider Mason Jordan-Tubbs, is entering its third phase with a new focus on independent businesses and unique local experiences. The initiative aims to help visitors discover parts of the town they might otherwise miss.
Mason launched the project after noticing guests at his Room Ready Stays accommodation frequently asked about local dining, events, and things to do. This led to the creation of online guides introducing visitors to Darlington's attractions, events, restaurants, transport links, and places to explore.
In its second phase, the project developed Darlington Maps, which group recommendations into map-based guides to make it easier for visitors to understand the townβs layout and discover nearby places.
Now, phase three will spotlight smaller, independent businesses, clubs, and activities that might not appear in conventional tourist searches. This includes entertainment venues, gaming and escape-room experiences, martial arts clubs, specialist fitness providers, creative activities, and unusual shops.
Rather than a typical business directory, the project aims to explain why these places are interesting and who might enjoy them. Mason hopes to uncover hidden gems that visitors could miss without local guidance.
Independent businesses, clubs, activity providers, and event organisers in Darlington are invited to get in touch to be considered for inclusion in future Discover Darlington content. There is no charge for being featured.
The project also seeks to encourage visitors to spend locally by introducing them to independent businesses beyond accommodation. Mason says,
If we can introduce a visitor to a local business they didn't know existed, that's good for the visitor and hopefully good for the business too.
The existing guides and maps will continue to expand alongside the new independent business features, with the goal of answering visitorsβ questions and encouraging them to explore more of Darlington.
